The Collapse Into Care
I didn't find self-care. I collapsed into it. Five kids in seven years. Moves across countries. A mother on her deathbed. And then my body said enough — I could barely get out of bed. I said goodbye to my mom in hospice, and when she passed on Christmas Eve, I spent Christmas in bed while a friend held things together for my family. The months that followed were pacing hallways at night for relief and losing most of my days to pain.
The 30-Day Commitment
One afternoon, walking through town, a thought landed on me at a street corner and changed everything: Ain't feeling it — ain't doing it. I made a commitment. For 30 days, if I didn't feel like doing it, I wasn't going to. Kids to school, kids fed — that was the floor. Everything else? Only if it felt right and doable in that moment. Those 30 days were the beginning of my self-care journey. And I've never stopped thinking about what it means to actually care for yourself when you're also caring for everyone else.
